Beginner beekeepers’ practical day
22 February 2022Winter Solstice Festival
17 June 2022Urban Beekeepers of the Inner West members, Steve and Gavin, were recently interviewed by VICE Media about bees and beekeeping. They talked about the history and practice of beekeeping and why it is important for our survival.
“Beekeeping existed at least as far back as the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans,” they told VICE. “There is abundant pictorial and written evidence of bees being kept in purpose-built containers. These varied from clay urns to wicker baskets and hollowed out timbers.”
“On an individual level, people can help bee populations to thrive by eliminating, or at least reducing, their use of herbicides and pesticides in their own garden. That, together with bee-friendly planting can certainly assist bee populations.”
