Gavin Smith OAM
Well-deserved recognition
Huge congratulations to Gavin Smith, a founding member of the Inner West Beekeepers, on receiving the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2025 Australia Day Honours! This is a fantastic achievement.
Gavin, a passionate beekeeper from the Inner West of Sydney, has dedicated countless hours to educating the community about the vital role bees play in our ecosystem. From rescuing countless swarms to promoting urban gardens, Gavin’s tireless efforts have made a significant impact on bee populations and environmental awareness.
Gavin’s work extends far beyond simply keeping bees. He’s a true advocate for these incredible creatures, tirelessly raising awareness about the challenges they face, from habitat loss and pesticide use to the impacts of climate change. He’s passionate about sharing his knowledge, encouraging sustainable beekeeping practices, and inspiring others to become involved in protecting our environment.

For many of us, including myself, Gavin’s passion for bees was truly inspiring. It was thanks to Gavin’s mentorship and encouragement that I embarked on my own beekeeping journey back in 2013. His guidance and support in those early years were invaluable, instilling in me not only the practical skills of beekeeping but also a deep appreciation for the intricate workings of the hive and the importance of bees to our ecosystem.
This OAM is a well-deserved recognition of Gavin’s commitment to sustainable beekeeping practices and his unwavering support for these crucial pollinators. His work serves as an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the importance of protecting our environment and nurturing the delicate balance of nature.
Congratulations again, Gavin!
